Professor Willoughby is a Professor of Ophthalmology in Ulster University and a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust where he practices in cataract surgery and glaucoma. Professor Willoughby trained in Liverpool and Canada and has led eye research in Queen’s University Belfast, the University of Liverpool, and Ulster University. He has performed charitable work in India, Cambodia and Sierra Leone tackling cataract and glaucoma blindness.

He is a member of the United Kingdom & Ireland Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (UKISCRS), European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), UK & Eire Glaucoma Society (UKEGS), European Glaucoma Society (EGS) and the International Society for Eye Research and lectures nationally and internationally on glaucoma, corneal diseases and genetics.
